Department Functions
Perry County Solid Waste Department manage regional waste policies and enforce state laws. They regulate licensed landfills, investigate illegal dumping, and coordinate community programs for recycling and household hazardous waste. Solid waste has one full time employee and sustains its operations from generated fees and grants.
Key responsibilities and functions may include but are not limited to:
- Compliance & Enforcement: Acting under a delegation agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), they inspect permitted facilities (landfills, transfer stations) and investigate complaints of open dumping or burning.
- Waste Reduction & Planning: Drafting and implementing local waste management plans to meet state requirements for recycling and diverting solid waste from landfills.
- Special Collections: Sponsoring events and permanent locations for the disposal of materials like electronics, paints, and chemicals.
